Newborn Baby Chunky Pixie Bonnet Hat Crochet Pattern

This adorable newborn baby pixie bonnet crochet pattern is perfect for beginners. The body of the hat is worked in half double crochets which makes it super quick and easy.  The border, trim and rosette are worked in single crochet, double crochet, chains and slip stitches.

Supplies:
  • Yarn for Body of Hat, Border Pom Poms & Middle of Rosette:  Super Bulky #6  (I used Hobby Lobby Baby Bee Sugar Pom-Pom Bulky #6 – Name/Color: Oh, Sweetums/04)
  • Yarn for Trim, outer part of rosette & chin straps:  #4 Worsted Weight (I used Hobby Lobby Yarn Bee Comfy Classic  Color: Coral)
  • Size I (5.5mm) Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
Abbreviations:

ch = chain

chs = chains

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

st = stitch

hk = hook

sl-st = slip stitch

Notes:

The turning chain does not count a a stitch.

My bonnet measures approx. 5 3/4″ x 5 3/4″ when laying flat.

Instructions:

Chain 19

Row 1:  hdc in 2nd ch from hk, hdc in the next 7 chs, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 chs, 1 hdc in each ch till end of row.   (20 hdc) Ch 1 and turn.

Rows 2-7:  hdc in 1st st (same st as ch 1 st), hdc in each ch till end of row.  (20 hdc) Ch 3 and turn.

Border:

Skip 1st st and sl-st in next st (this will create your 1st loop; ch 3, sk next st, sl-st in next st all the way across.  (Total of 10 loops)  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fold bonnet over to wrong side and whip stitch the side opposite of the border to create the back seam.  Turn bonnet right side out and continue with trim as instructed below.

Trim:

Change to I (5.5.mm) Hook and #4 worsted weight yarn of your choice.

Starting in 1st hdc of Border,  join new color (with I hook) with a sl-st.  {*Sc, ch 4, sc in ch 3 sp, ch 2, skip next st and sc in next st, ch 2*}  Repeat from {* to*} across.  At end of row, ch 40.  Turn and sc in 2nd ch from hk and sc in each ch you just made all the way back up to neck edge. Sc evenly along neck edge.  When you reach the end of the neck edge, ch 40 again, turn and sc in each ch all the way back up.  Join with a sl-st to 1st sl-st.

Optional: Attach pom-poms to chin straps.
Outside of Rosette:

Using Size I Hook & #4 Yarn

Ch 26 : – Sc in 2nd ch from hook.  {*Sk next ch, 5 dc in next ch, sk next ch, sc in next ch*} repeat {* to*} across.  At end of row, finish off (leave a 7″ tail for sewing).  Following the curve of the rosette, roll it up into a rosette and sew it through the layers so it remains curled up.  Then attach to  bonnet.

Center of Rosette:

With Size I Hook & #6 Yarn:  Ch 3-5 and roll-up to and attach to center of Rosette.
